A fourrée is a counterfeit coin made of a base metal and then silver plated to mimic the original. Most ancient fourrées, including this example, were created in antiquity at the same time that the genuine coins were in circulation. Like counterfeiters today, those in antiquity took a large risk by this activity with the death penalty the normal punishment for such an egregious action.
