The eldest son of Ptolemy II Philadelphus and his first wife, Arisone I, Ptolemy III came to power in 246 BCE. The ruler of an established, but young, dynasty, he did well to further the positions of his predecessors both domestically and abroad. He also expand the trade network of Egypt and gained local support by promoting the Egyptian religion cults such as that of the Apis Bull. He married Berenice II, with whom he had six children, most notably Ptolemy IV Philopator.
