After the death of Alexander the Great, his general, Ptolemy I Soter, took possession of Egypt and established the Ptolemaic dynasty. It would prove to be one of the most successful dynasties of the Hellenistic period and would last until its defeat by Rome in 30 BCE. These coins are typical of Ptolemaic coinage and demonstrate well the variety present within their seemingly repetitive themes.
