| Fantastic Russian silver and shaded enameled beaker by Nikolai Alexeiev, made in Moscow, 88 standard silver, between 1908-1917. Measuring approximately 5 3/4" (14.6 cm) tall and 3 1/2" (9 cm) across, the mid-section of the slightly tapered cup is ornately enameled in sophisticated scrolling floral and geometric designs, highlighted with spotted berries and punctuated with raised silver droplets. From the inversely tapering foot upwards, the first 2 1/2" inches is fully enameled in bands, featuring primarily teardrop-shaped geometric designs, but also trapezoidal lozenges and a scrolling floral vine, topped with a taupe band; all the bands are heavily embellished with gilded whorls and raised silver droplets. From the top rim down, the first 1" is similarly enameled in bands, featuring trapezoidal lozenges and scrolling floral patterns, interspersed with raised beehive-like gilded whorls. In mint original condition, the beaker is strongly gilded inside and under the base, where it is fully marked and bears a intertwined three-letter monogram and the scratched inventory number 1978C. Provenance: Sotheby Parke Benet Inc, New York, December 11-12, 1975: lot 453. Absolutely superb, this cup is a centerpiece to be admired. | ||
