This is a 14kt (tested) Victorian design referred to as a mourning ring. The inscription reads: "Eol to Mattie April 2, 1876." The black enamel work is also characteristic of Victorian mourning jewelry.
In addition to the black enamel, the ring is adorned with two small cultured pearls and a lovely, full cut, clear diamond.
