Measurements: 9" long x 1 3/4" wide I believe that this is another Victorian souvenir of the Grand Tour popular with the new middle class of American at the turn of the last century. The entire spoon is carved from some type of translucent horn -- worn very smooth and of a warm brown color. The spoon is topped by the traditional symbol of Scotland: the thistle, set on a hand etched "sleeve." The shield mounted on the shaft of the spoon is also hand etched and was meant to hold an initial, but it was never inscribed. Rub this type of serving piece with oil (mineral oil is a good choice) to prevent the spoon from becoming brittle and it will be usable for the next one hundred years. |
