This bold studio piece is composed of a hand-wrought half-moon shaped pendant decorated with applied wires and impressed lines arranged randomly. It is suspended horizontally by a chain of forged wire bars connected by beaded rivets. The bib-like pendant is beautifully balanced to sit comfortably at the collarbone; the front hook closure makes for ease of fastening and removal. The reverse of the pendant bears the sterling mark on one end and a maker’s mark of sp on the other...

Composed of filigreed sterling silver panels, this bracelet is reminiscent of Chinese wirework, but it is American-made. The back of one panel is marked Jordan, for the R.M. Jordan Co. of Providence, RI, which produced a line of Russian- and Chinese-inspired jewelry during World War II, called its “United Nations” line. (A short write-up on p. 53 in the Sept...

A bow pin with a delicate, classic look from a popular jeweler of the period, Walter Lampl. The moonstone is securely bezel-mounted and features three applied sterling beads to one side. The back bears the maker’s mark and a mark for sterling, as well as a slightly bent pin stem with a very secure rollover clasp. The stone shows very little wear, as does the sterling silver, which exhibits a nice patina from age. The pin measures 2 ½ inches wide by 2 ¼ inches high. Gross weight: 16.8 grams

A nicely designed and sturdily constructed studio piece made of cast pieces expertly joined and finished. The geometric banding and incised rays at each end suggest a Southwest origin, but the only mark is a roughly engraved signature, I-Paul, on the back of the setting. The band is composed of three strands that diverge at the shoulders. The carnelian is smooth and without flaws or damage; the entire ring appears to have been hardly worn. It tests definitively for sterling...

Of angular abstract design, with a textured surface, set with two small chrysoprase cabochons. The band is composed of two parallel strands that are connected at the terminals. The marks for Spain and 750 for silver content appear on the exterior edge of one terminal, indicating a date range of 1934 to 1988. The ring measures about 6 ½.

A bold bow pin enhanced with white chalcedony at the knot and in teardrops at the ribbon ends, with an unidentified maker’s mark of S within a C. The stones are securely mounted, exhibiting some wear -- tiny scratches and minor loss to the polished surface -- but no cracks or chips. The pin surface has a warm patina from age, with minor surface scratches. The clasp is very secure; the pin stem is slightly bent but in good working order...

This sophisticated design is the work of the Polish workshop of ORNO, in Warsaw. The curved, open, ovular pendant has a slight twist to it, exposing the highly oxidized interior to all sides, so there is no back or front. The surface features molded horizontal scoring enhanced with oxidation. There are a couple of spots, visible on one side, where the mold left a couple of small, smooth spots...

A substantial sterling silver chain composed of doubled rings, bars and beads with connecting links; there is a central ring for attaching a pendant, or the chain can be worn as is. The secure box clasp bears what appears to be the maker’s mark of Beto, as pictured in Bille Hougart’s Mexican silver marks book, third edition, p. 27. The eagle 22 is the most legible mark; the others are not entirely clear. The chain measures 27 ½ inches long, unclasped. Weight: 38 grams

Formed as fish skeletons, they are nicely made, with working screw backs that are marked sterling. The backs of the fish are also marked sterling, along with a partial mark that ends with the word ‘Silversmith.’ Please note that some of the pictures show the surface with a yellow cast; the truest color of the silver is in the last two photos. Each earring measures 1 1/8 inches long. Weight: 6.6 grams total

Decorated with applied wirework rosettes, this hoop necklace has an Asian feel, but sports Austrian import marks (hard to see in the photo). It is continuous, and doesn’t appear to have ever had a clasp. The necklace has a nice weight and a dramatic, contemporary look. The Austrian mark for silver content is illegible, but the necklace is probably .800 or .835 fineness; the mark indicates a registration in Vienna. Doubled, it measures about 14 ½ inches long. Weight: 74.8 grams

Composed of an applied cast floral layer on a plain, hinged bangle bracelet, with a secure tongue-and-groove clasp and security chain. The tongue bears French import marks that indicate the piece came from a country that did not have a customs treaty with France; the marks guarantee a silver content of at least .800. The bangle measures about ½ inch wide with an internal circumference of just under 7 inches. Gross weight: 28.4 grams

Moonstone cabochons are bezel-mounted within oval onyx panels sitting in silver linked frames. All stones are very secure; one moonstone has a crack down the center that isn’t highly visible but can be felt by running a fingernail over it. The moonstones exhibit a milky quality with some blue highlights. The bracelet has a new sterling silver spring-ring clasp. The bracelet is unmarked, but tests positively for silver. It measures about 7 ¾ inches long, including the clasps.

A nice revival piece imitating the late Victorian Scottish agate pins. The agates are securely set in etched sterling silver. The top features a pierced setting mounted with a glass half-bead in the same dark honey color of the original Scottish cairngorms. The pin has a rollover clasp that probably replaced the original C-clasp. The pin stem appears to be original. The pin is unmarked, but tests as sterling silver. It measures a little over 2 ½ inches long.

This textured cuff bracelet features a pocked surface and is decorated with applied half-beads of molded silver. The piece is unmarked, but definitively tests as silver, possibly sterling. Its surface exhibits areas of oxidation, and a couple of areas where the texture didn’t take in the molding process. The bracelet measures 1 ½ inches wide, with an interior circumference of just under 7 inches, including the 1 ¼-inch opening between the terminals. Weight: 52.3 grams

Made by N.E. From of Denmark, the clean lines of the pendant give it a classic that has its roots in mid-century modernist design. The stone is bezel set within a concave disc surrounded by a circular wire. The disc is enhanced with oxidation. The sterling chain measures 18 inches long; the pendant drops 1 ¼ inches and measures 1 inch wide.
