This bold studio piece is composed of a hand-wrought half-moon shaped pendant decorated with applied wires and impressed lines arranged randomly. It is suspended horizontally by a chain of forged wire bars connected by beaded rivets. The bib-like pendant is beautifully balanced to sit comfortably at the collarbone; the front hook closure makes for ease of fastening and removal. Composed of filigreed sterling silver panels, this bracelet is reminiscent of Chinese wirework, but it is American-made. The back of one panel is marked Jordan, for the R.M. Jordan Co. of Providence, RI, which produced a line of Russian- and Chinese-inspired jewelry during World War II, called its “United Nations” line. (A short write-up on p. 53 in the Sept...

This handmade ring features a marquis-shaped agate cabochon; stone’s banding forms a dramatic, kaleidoscopic design. The stone is securely mounted in a jagged-edge bezel, and the back bears the sterling mark and maker’s mark of JF, possibly Native American. The silver has a warm patina, with minor signs of wear; the highly polished stone exhibits no wear or damage. The ring is a size 7 ¾.

A bow pin with a delicate, classic look from a popular jeweler of the period, Walter Lampl. The moonstone is securely bezel-mounted and features three applied sterling beads to one side. The back bears the maker’s mark and a mark for sterling, as well as a slightly bent pin stem with a very secure rollover clasp. The stone shows very little wear, as does the sterling silver, which exhibits a nice patina from age. The pin measures 2 ½ inches wide by 2 ¼ inches high. Gross weight: 16.8 grams

A nicely designed and sturdily constructed studio piece made of cast pieces expertly joined and finished. The geometric banding and incised rays at each end suggest a Southwest origin, but the only mark is a roughly engraved signature, I-Paul, on the back of the setting. The band is composed of three strands that diverge at the shoulders. The carnelian is smooth and without flaws or damage; the entire ring appears to have been hardly worn. It tests definitively for sterling...

Formed on one side as a flower in bloom and as a bud on other side. The flowers are decorated in light aqua, yellow and pale pink; the buds are a bit more colorful in light aqua, yellow and two shades of green. The enamel is intact save for some minor cracking and a tiny stable chip on one flower; the other flower and two buds have no damage or other condition issues. The bridge chains are sturdy and securely attached. The are unmarked but show a strong test for sterling...

The stones are securely mounted, exhibiting some wear -- tiny scratches and minor loss to the polished surface -- but no cracks or chips. The pin surface has a warm patina from age, with minor surface scratches. The clasp is very secure; the pin stem is slightly bent but in good working order...

This sophisticated design is the work of the Polish workshop of ORNO, in Warsaw. The curved, open, ovular pendant has a slight twist to it, exposing the highly oxidized interior to all sides, so there is no back or front. The surface features molded horizontal scoring enhanced with oxidation. There are a couple of spots, visible on one side, where the mold left a couple of small, smooth spots...

The secure box clasp bears what appears to be the maker’s mark of Beto, as pictured in Bille Hougart’s Mexican silver marks book, third edition, p. 27. The eagle 22 is the most legible mark; the others are not entirely clear. The chain measures 27 ½ inches long, unclasped. Weight: 38 grams

Decorated with applied wirework rosettes, this hoop necklace has an Asian feel, but sports Austrian import marks (hard to see in the photo). It is continuous, and doesn’t appear to have ever had a clasp. The necklace has a nice weight and a dramatic, contemporary look. The Austrian mark for silver content is illegible, but the necklace is probably .800 or .835 fineness; the mark indicates a registration in Vienna. Doubled, it measures about 14 ½ inches long. Weight: 74.8 grams
