Mexican Wood, Glass and Mixed Metal Earrings, c. 1965
A pair of earrings with a dramatic geometrical design with heft, literally and figuratively. The square drops feature rectangular pieces of wood and black glass inset within a sterling silver framed panel, separated by strips of silver and copper. The drops suspend from small sterling silver drums with screw backs attached. There is some scratching to the glass, which is roughly cut. The silver has a warm patina. The panel backs bear an interesting set of marks: the makerís mark for C. Lopez, with what looks like a partial eagle 3 mark, as well as marks for sterling and Mexico; and a script mark for sterling over what looks like a stylized N with a small protrusion. The screw backs are marked simply silver/Mexico. The drops measure just under 1 inch square; the entire length, including the drum at the top, is 1 ĺ inches. Gross weight: 22.7 grams
