| 11.25" high, base 7" long. Two ceramic light dishes remain. Rusting and a very small crack (see picture). Probably late Edo era, c. 1800-1860. These light stands called "Tomyodai" were used at Buddhist temples in Japan for making votive offerings. Oil and small wicks were placed in the ceramic dishes. The tear shaped design probably alludes to the Buddhist halo. See Moes & Stinchecum's 1995 catalog of Mingei, p. 186 for a related example. Rare and beautiful example of Buddhist Art. | ||
