The West has the Gilded Age, those in South East Asia has the extremely rich and unique hybrid of a culture called the Peranakan Chinese. When Europe delighted in the Edwardian platinum swirls raged in Britain, this is what was happening in the Dutch East Indies, Malaka, and Singapore. This is one of the remnant of an amazing bygone era that was the early 20th century. The skills demanded to produce one of these has been lost, and people are just beginning to try to recover them, with very limited success. Silver. Made entirely by hand. Only the belt on the top layer is for sale. The lower belt is sold separately. You can compare the quality of workmanships in the two belts, which is reflected in each of their asking prices. Length 58 cm without buckle. Buckle measures approximately 7.5 x 7.8 cm. Judging from the size this is probably traditionally a girl's belt. It can easily translate to a belt for a modern very skinny person :-) I wear my collection of silver Peranakan belts with a variety of cotton and linen dresses and tops and jeans. It is one of the most versatile antique jewelry I know. Yes, this belt is a piece of jewelry! I can't even put belt under the category of jewelry that's how unique this kind of belt is! Very good condition for one of these which are getting harder and harder to find whole. Feel free to contact me for more photos. Thank you for dropping by :-)

here's a magnificent one of a kind religious assemblage necklace created by combining several antique French religious relics. The focal is the 19th century French convex glass and brass frame carved meerschaum reliquary depicting Mary holding a young John The Baptist in her lap with a cross. The reliquary suspends from an antique French black carved wooden rosary. The rosary center has Lourdes on one side and Coeur de Marie on the other. At the nape, an antique French brass Sacred Heart of Mary ex voto reliquary suspends from an antique brass clasp which opens like a locket allowing you to add your own message of devotion inside if so desired. The necklace measures 19.5" unclasped. The meerschaum reliquary measures 2.37". The Sacred Heart ex voto measures 1.5".

Fabulous antique French Meerschaum piece featuring Mary with the sacred heart is the focal point of this necklace. Someone has taken some time to reinforce the Meerschaum in the frame, which is great. This piece is special not only in these but also because it is signed by the artist. The meerschaum suspends from an upcycled clipalso from France...also featuring the sacred heart. An additional lovely baroque pearl joins the two wonderful French pieces. The necklace is made up of fabulous, raw and rough baroque pearls. These are beautiful and shimmer in creamy tones. Hints of grey, brown and gold can be seen in these wonderful pearls. Necklace is approximately 21.25" long, with the sacred heart and meerschaum drop adding an additional 5.25". is constructed using sterling silver wire. The hook clasp is a recast watch hook piece in bronze that matches the meerschaum frame and the sacred heart. Silver has been oxidized in keeping with the antique elements. The necklace is made new, but the material are vintage and old.

This is a silver plated Peranakan Chinese (Straits Chinese) belt. I am not sure what the actual metal underneath is but it feels very light compared to the other silver belts I owned. I suspect this was made relatively more recent. The height of the Peranakan culture was the rally 1900s, which coincided with the Art Nouveau and Edwardian period. This feels like a more modest imitation of the real deal, and the listing price here reflects that. It still requires and considerable skill to make and it is a good substitute to wear around with modern clothing and spare the owner any palpitations during the rough and tumble of daily wear. Length of belt is approximately 70 cm, width 4 cm and buckle 8x9 cm. This is an old item, so there are signs of wear and repairs.

This is a modern take of the "wayang golek". Operated like like the shadow puppets, but without the shadow and presented directly to the audience, they are traditionally Javanese (Island of Java in Indonesia). This particular puppet is dressed in the Balinese (Island of Bali in Indonesia) traditional style, with a modernize facial features as well, making this a Javanese "Wayang Golek" inspired decorative object one place in one's living room. The head piece is just simply stunning. This is hand crafted to order for Blue Ginger using a traditional Balinese cloth of our choice (newly made cloth, we do not participate in the destruction of historical vintage traditional cloths of Indonesia). ONE OF A KIND. No two pieces are ever exactly alike. CONDITION: NEWLY CRAFTED. DIMENSION: APPROXIMATELY 80 cm or 31 inches. PLEASE NOTE *THE SECOND PICTURE IS NOT THE ITEM LISTED HERE, IT IS FOR ILLUSTRATIVE PURPOSES ONLY*

Banyumas style Peranakan / Straits Chinese Batik Tulis. Fully hand drawn, dipped and stripped. The penmanship style suggest a hint of what is commonly known as the Dutch style, with block print like simplicity and stylized patterns filling its floral and animals figures. We also noted the indigo blue dye. The Java Indigo was well known for its quality of indigo blue in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Banyumas style batik tulis are well known to be of exceptional quality when the indigo blue is pervasively and intensively applied all over a piece of "kain panjang", with darker indigo almost definitely more expensive, exceptional and almost always more rare, because Java Indigo dye was very expensive. Some blacks on older Banyumas batik tulis are actually very very intense indigo. It appears that newer pieces simply used black dye. Considering the indigo blue dye, the Dutch style patterns used, and the crisp fell of the cloth, we estimated this to be from around the 1930s, or sometime before the second world war. CONDITION: There are 3 small holes as indicated by white stickers, the one pictured here is the largest, there is also an approximately 4 cm repair of a rip which stitching has come loose on some part. There are also some indigo blue dye spots as pictured. PLEASE NOTE that in many Banyumas style batik tulis, crackling and veins of dye are often found, and these are not commonly considered to be faults. Please take a look at our pics or request for them by emailing us. I have only come across two of this kind of design on Banyumas style batik tulis. The other piece with no indingo dye is in my wardrobe :)
