This is another example of a combination of a very traditional Javanese "sogan" brown (from the bark of the "soga" tree) with a European influenced bouquet design in a Peranakan Chinese batik tulis from Java. Note the "baskets" from which the bouquets stemmed out from. That is very European. The cloth itself is very crisp. It has a distinct hand feel, which is very similar cotton cloths which originated from the early 1900s. WWII ended a variety of trading activities one of which was the import of high grade cotton cloths from Europe (particularly Germany). If this originated from the early 1900s, this is in an extremely good condition. If this came from a later period, it is possible that the cloth might have been sourced from an older stock. Either way, we managed to have a rather good deal here. Dating batik tulis can be extremely hard when items are not signed, even when they are signed. Unlike western clothing, we do not have any particular style reference which we could link to a period in time, and unlike paintings, signing convention can be "corporate" in nature in that it functioned more like a brand rather than signature, and to confuse things further, each generation of batik maker of a particular family could sign their own names, but have an army or artisan under their supervision who make their batiks rather differently from each other, thereby making it difficult to distinguish their period from stylistic cues alone. Either way, this belong to that hybrid peranakan Chinese batik tulis which combine the very traditional with what was then the very modern. This kind of style was found as late as the 1940s and as early as the early 1900s. CONDITION: EXCELLENT! --- REDUCED PRICE
