This Japanese bronze “kugikakushi” (ornamental metal covering to hide nails) was cast in high relief in the form of a bamboo stalk and leaves. Mid-Meiji period, ca. 1880-1890. Fancy kugikakushi were decorated in various good luck and auspicious motifs such as this one. It depicts a large bamboo (“take”) stalk with its leaves that is a symbol of strength and resilience in the Japanese culture. Elegant Koransha white porcelain footed dish with dramatic design of large underglaze blue leaves, small overglaze turquoise leaves and overglaze red enamel berries outlined in gold. This unusual copper match-safe is wonderfully decorated in high relief with blossoming spider chrysanthemums. Meiji/Taisho period, early 20th century. Both sides feature two large spider mums, their gracefully arching petals beautifully rendered in superb detail. Lovely little Japanese porcelain ovoid from vase decorated in underglaze gray enamels and overglaze iron-red enamel and gilt with a dragon emerging from swirling storm clouds. Meiji period (1868-1912). The base is marked with the mountain trademark of the Fukagawa Porcelain Manufacturing Company painted in underglaze blue. This hand-cut antique stencil paper known as “katagami” was used for traditional Japanese rice paste-resist dyeing for kimono and other textiles. Meiji/Taisho period, early 20th century. With two medallions comprised of open-winged butterflies on fine web mesh background, this intricately carved stencil was cut by a master artisan out of a mulberry paper base and treated with persimmon extract. This beautiful hand-knotted cotton pile Japanese carpet (“dantsu”) with its stunning and bold design originated from Aka in Hyogo Prefecture, an area famous for its carpet production during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Ca. 1910-1925.
