This unusual Japanese “futongawa” or “futonji” has been skillfully hand drawn and decorated with colorful Japanese fans (“ogi”) using a rice paste resist design technique called “tsutsugaki.” Meiji period (1868-1912). Five pairs of open fans and two closed fans boldly decorate the cover. The body of this handsome early 20th century Japanese folk ceramic hibachi in rounded 10-sided form is glazed in rich dark brown with an unctuous blue and mauve flambe glaze on its rim and dripping down its sides. The upper half of the interior is washed in brown glaze. We have been unable to determine the folk kiln of its origin. Set of five 19th century Japanese Ko Kutani (Old Kutani) style ceramic plates in the revival style likely from the Yoshidaya kilns. Each plate is freely decorated in rich overglaze enamel colors of yellow, blue, green, red and aubergine depicting a characteristic Chinese figure in a landscape. Each plate has a “pie crust” raised edge with a diaper design within its border, the flat rim outlined in a reddish brown glaze (“beni ye”). This handsome Japanese tobacco box, made from finely grained keyaki wood, is crafted in miniature naga-hibachi (long firebox) form. Late 19th century. An inner wood lip encloses the original copper liner, and the bamboo cylinder ash receptacle is also original. There is one tiny drawer which has been cut from the same piece of hardwood as the body, so the grain across the drawer front is perfectly matched with the box.
