This impressive late Edo period wide area map, printed and published ca. 1860, shows the old provinces of Hitachi, Shimoksuke, Kozuke, Kai, Shinano, Totomi and all the provinces surrounding present day Tokyo. In today's geography, this would include (approximately) the area in the west from Hamamatsu; east and north from Tokyo to about Iwaki on the Pacific coast. Wide area maps such as this one were not published in Japan until the last few years of the Edo period. This folding woodblock ma ...click for details

This marvelous Japanese Imari porcelain plate is quite unique inasmuch as it was decorated in classic shonsui style but was done so with brilliant polychrome enamels and gilt in addition to the more typical underglaze blue design. Likely mid-19th century, but possibly earlier. On the reverse there is a four character underglaze blue mark that was used on Imari wares in the 18th century. (See page 274 of “Shibata Collection Part IV” for mark.) A heavily brocaded gilt and iron red background with ...click for details
