This handsome late 19th century red lacquered Korean rice chest has a thick lift top which is secured by a heavy iron lock. The double latticework doors, which were originally lined with rice paper, open to reveal storage space into which a shelf has been mounted. The wood appears to be pine, and the construction of the outside frame is mortise and tendon joinery. The unusual door hinges and ring pulls are crafted of iron. Superb workmanship and elegant design are clearly visible in this chest. Rice chests were basically large square boxes, usually made of elm or thick pine, which were always kept locked. All the staples and condiments of a Korean kitchen were carefully stored away in such chests, and the basic staple of Korea for thousands of years has been rice. Kitchen chests were usually ornamented with black iron because brass tarnished quickly in proximity to the cooking fire. Although these chests were simple and utilitarian, Korean chest makers used their talents of design and construction to produce interesting, attractive and well-made furniture. CONDITION is excellent. DIMENSIONS: 28” (71.1 cm) high, extended top is 31 5/8” (80.2 cm) wide and 20 ½” (52.1 cm) deep; body of chest is 26 ¼” (66.7 cm) wide and 15 3/8” (39.1 cm) deep. |
