A Japanese Album of 50 Hand Coloured Albumen Photographs. Meiji Period Overall size 13 3/4 x 10 3/4 ins. (35 x 27.3 cms) Size of photographs 10 1/2 x 8 1/8 ins. The bulk of the images, as with many albums of this period, are of the Tokugawa Shrine at Nikko. We have shown a selection of the most interesting images. (24.3 x 21.3 cms) This design is no.44 in the "Reishi" 53 Stations of the Tokaido series published by Marusei ca. 1850. The station shown is Yokkaichi. It is a very good impression but unfortunately the print has been trimmed within the margins. There is surface soiling, binding holes at the left edge and a tiny worm hole in the centre. This superb painted pottery tile was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279). It features an Apsara (or Apsaras), a female spirit of the clouds and water, in high relief. It is vividly painted in white, black, red and orange pigments. Note the detail of the clouds. A Japanese Woodblock Print by Adachi Gingko Dated 1890. 14 1/4 x 9 1/2 ins. (36.3 x 24.3 cms) The scene, with its rather startling perspective, shows tea pickers (?) one with a child on her back, viewing peonies.
