A rare opportunity to acquire a Northern Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1127) kiln saggar still containing its Qingbai porcelain bowl, excavated from a kiln site in the Jingdezhen area of Jiangxi province. This is one of a variety of different Qingbai porcelain in saggars, mostly bowls and dishes of varying sizes and patterns, that we were very lucky to be able to acquire some time ago and now offer for sale.

This porcelain bowl was made during the Wanli Reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty. It is quite "heavily-potted" and is coated in a thick crackled glaze that is finely crackled. The decoration in underglaze blue is of very good colour. The inner design features a standing bird, the crane, a symbol of longevity, surrounded by a key-fret border around the rim. The outer wall is decorated with large floral designs...

This sizeable porcelain bowl was made during the Wanli Reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty and is of the type generally referred to as "Swatow" ware. It is relatively "heavily-potted" and coated with a thick glaze. The inner centre is decorated in underglaze blue with a Dog of Fo.

Diameter 20.5 cm (8 inches)...

This porcelain bowl with flared rim was made during the late 15th - early 16th century. It has a crackled glaze and is decorated in underglaze blue with an elaborate pattern featuring the "Three Friends of Winter", the bamboo, pine and prunus, or plum. 

Bamboo is a symbol of longevity as it remains green throughout winter. Pine, an evergreen, represents strength and longevity...

This fine and attractively-shaped bowl was made during the mid to late 1400's. The decoration, in underglaze blue, is particularly well-drawn. In the centre of the bowl is a lotus flower, whilst the decoration on the outer wall features finely-veined leaves around the base and a scrolling band around the rim. It is coated in a finely-crackled glaze.

Diameter 14 cm (5.5 inches)...

This unusually large porcelain bowl was made in the 12th century, during the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1127 - 1279) and was recovered some years ago from a shipwreck. It is coated in a translucent pale green Qingbai type glaze that is finely-crackled in places. In its centre are five "spur" or firing marks where such bowls were stacked on top of each other in the kiln separated by spacers. Note the slight warp of the thick footrim cause...

This unusual jar was made during the 16th century. It is heavily-potted with a six-lobed body. The six lobes are decorated in alternating patterns, water and floral. The glaze is particularly thick and has "crawled" in places around the base of the neck.

Height 8.5 cm (3.35 inches). There is minor damage to the mouth but no repair or restoration; very good overall condition.

This rare white-ware box was made in the 13th - 14th century during the late Song or Yuan Dynasty, at the Dehua kilns in Fujian province. It is decorated with a moulded scrolling floral pattern. The glaze stops short of the foot which is slightly concave and unglazed. The base shows what looks like a repair, but it is in fact original material from its manufacture - not restoration or repair !.
