Large Chinese Neolithic / Bronze Age Twin-Handled Jar - Siwa (c. 1350 BC)
This large and impressive pottery jar dates to the Siwa culture (c. 1350 BC). From its fairly small base, the body spreads out to a wide waist and then tapers in again to a neck of about the same width as the base before flaring out to form the mouth. There are two loop handles that join the shoulder to the rim. Most of the pottery has been fired to a very attractive orange-red but with interesting variations in colour in places, a result of uneven conditions during the firing process.
Height 39 cm (15.25 inches). There are some limescale-type deposits in places from its long burial; these are quite easily removed. There is minor repair to the edge of the mouth and what appears to be a stabilised firing crack at the waist on one side. A lovely jar in very good condition.
