| A Japanese Woodblock Ishizuri-e Print by Hiroshige 2nd. 1840s. 6 1/8 x 4 1/4 ins. (15.6 x 10.8 cms) This rare print is part of a unititled harimaze set (harimaze prints had several designs to a sheet and were intended to be separated) printed in the ishizuri-e (stone rubbing) style. Some of the series were designed jointly with Hiroshige 1st. (see our other listings). There seems to have been a vogue for such things in the 1840s and Hiroshige did a number of designs in this style, all rare nowadays. We were only able to find one complete sheet from the series sold in recent years in the Beres sale at Sotheby Paris in 2002 where it fetched 1500 Euros. The design of Winterberry and Dried Fish is signed Shigenobu (Hiroshige 2nd.) Interestingly the series appears to have had no title, no publishers or censors seals, possibly it was a private commission for private circulation. The condition is very good with no damage and no repairs. There is an example of the design in Boston Museum. Google Boston Museum, click on home page and enter in top search box "hiroshige ishizuri" it will find 4 examples then click on "collections" to view. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN ORIGINAL PRINTING NOT A FACSIMILE OR REPRINT. | ||
