A Fine and Rare Japanese Drawing by Nishiyama Kanei (1834-1897)

The artist, Nishiyama Kan'ei (1834-1897) was an Osaka artist and the son & pupil of Nishiyama Hoen. He was well-known as a Confucian literary scholar and at one time served the Daimyo of Akashi. In that monumental work "The Art of the Japanese Book" by Jack Hillier. London 1987. Plate 188. Jack Hillier says "......his one book confirms the view, gained from the relatively few kakemono and album drawings, that he possessed greater individuality than most of the Shijo practitioners of the time."

This fine Shijo drawing shows a persimmon (kaki) with a branch of unidentified fruits rendered in ink and colour on paper. The drawing has Kanei's seals. It is the sole remaining drawing from a small collection of his works we bought many years ago, some of which were the drawings for his master work, the ehon "Kanei Gafu". Like the others it has a faint centre fold having been in an album at some time. It has a light backing sheet and there is a flaw in the paper toward the top left corner. The spots on the backing sheets are not "foxing".
