Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Buddhist Lotus Jar

This rare and interesting pottery jar was made between the 10th and 13th centuries, during the Five Dynasties period (AD 906 - 960), Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) or possibly the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368) and has been excavated from a Buddhist site in Yunnan province.

It is quite "heavily-potted" and relatively highly-fired. The jar and cover have been formed with a lotus leaf design. In places are remains of white and red pigment, also suggesting a painted lotus leaf pattern.

Height 26 cm (10.25 inches). Some surface wear but no sign of restoration or repair; very good condition.

This jar is from our own collection of Buddhist vessels from Yunnan that we have collected over several years and not previously offered for sale.
