Very Rare Tall Chinese Sui / Tang Dynasty Iridescent Glazed Figure
This fine pottery figure of a servant, possibly a groom, was made during either the Sui Dynasty (AD 581 - 618) or the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is quite highly fired, having a distinct ring when tapped. It is coated in a pale yellow / straw glaze that has acquired an attractive silvery iridescence, a result of long burial in damp conditions. The glaze where thickest is finely crackled. There are also good remains of red and black pigments, "cold painted" on top of the glazed surface. Note the detail, especially to the clothing and hairstyle.
Most Sui / Tang straw glazed figures are fairly small. This is an exception with an impressive height of 35 cm (13.75 inches). There are very faint signs suggesting that possibly the head has been broken and re-attached, but if this is the case, the quality of the repair is very high. This is a very rare figure in fine condition.
