This superb and very rare pottery bottle was made over 6,000 years ago during the Banpo phase (c. 4800 - 4300 BC) of the Yangshao culture. A simple design but certainly an item of beauty. It has a wide body, a neck with a wide base that tapers up toward the bulbous mouth. It has been fired to a particularly attractive reddish-orange and has a fine burnished surface, delightfully smooth to the touch. To the lower body is an area of "calcified" deposits from its long burial; this is usually very easy to remove but we leave it here as it is part of the bottle's extremely long history. 

A good size with a height of 29 cm (11.5 inches). Condition is also exceptional with the only sign of repair being to the mouth where close examination suggests that part of the mouth has been broken and re-stuck and chips to the rim built up.  

We have had this bottle tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this item is shown: this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 4,600 and 7,100 years ago".
