Fine Chinese Neolithic Pottery Jar - Caiyuan Culture (c. 2600 - 2200 BC)

This rare and attractively-shaped round pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago by peoples of the Caiyuan Culture (c. 2600 - 2200 BC) and has been excavated from the Ningxia Autonomous Region in the north of China. It is finely-potted with a wide body and wide flared-mouth. The surface above the waist, as well as the inside of the mouth, has been finely-burnished and is very smooth to the touch. Around the neck is a band of decorative indentations. Note the unusual way in which the underside of the rim has been formed. The surface below the waist shows marks from the shaping tool, and the base has what seem to be carved diagonal markings.

A good size with a height of 19 cm and diameter of 20 cm. Fine condition with only a small surface chip to the top of the rim and no sign of restoration or repair.
