Chinese Early Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Figure (AD 618 - 906)

This rare and interesting pottery figure was made during the early part of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a grey pottery and is solid (as opposed to being hollow as are the majority of Tang figures), having been made in two halves that have been luted together, that has been "cold painted" in various coloured pigments. The figure represents a soldier, or possibly a guard, who is standing to attention with his left hand held out. In this hand is a purpose-made hole where originally would have been placed a miniature weapon, most likely made of wood and now long since rotted away and lost. The figure wears a belted robe and a pointed helmet. Note especially the detail of the painted facial features. Height 26 cm (10.25 inches). Very good condition.
