Fine Pair of Large Chinese Warring States Jars
Fine Pair of Large Chinese Warring States Burnished and Decorated Pottery Jars (475 - 221 BC)

This fine pair of large pottery jars was made during the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC). They are made from a fine-grained grey pottery and have a highly burnished surface, extremely smooth to the touch. Around the shoulder are many bands of lightly incised geometric patterns. The surface colours vary from black to shades of grey due to conditions in the kiln during firing. There are also areas of burial deposits on the surface in places. The darker of the two jars has an area where the burnished surface has "delaminated" due to age.

The diameter of each jar is approximately 32 cm (12.5 inches), height 25 cm (9.75 inches). These jars are in exceptional condition; the darker jar has a fine hairline crack to the rim that has been stabilised, otherwise there is no sign of restoration or repair.
