Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Tray, Cup, Bowl & Ladle Set (with Oxford TL Test)
This impressive painted pottery tray, complete with its set of six "ear" cups, handled bowl and ladle dates to the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). All are made from the same grey pottery, with the red pigment having been "cold painted" after firing. On the upper surface of the tray are incised rectangles, within which the pigment has been applied. The tray stands on four moulded legs. The bowl, or basin, has a handle in the form of a dragon's head with its mouth open. The handle of the ladle is curved so that it sits looped over the rim of the bowl.
The length of the tray is 50 cm (19.5 inches), its width 32 cm (12.5 inches). The length of each ear cup is approximately 11 cm (4.25 inches) and the diameter of the bowl, not including its handle, is 18 cm (7 inches).
As with many of our finer pieces, we have had this set tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this item is shown; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 1500 and 2400 years ago".
