LARGE Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Dish
LARGE Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Deep Dish (Wanli 1573 - 1620)

This large "Swatow" porcelain dish was made during the latter part of the Ming Dynasty, the Wanli reign (1573 - 1620). It is quite "heavily-potted" and coated in a thick glaze. The central pattern is that of two birds in a park; similar examples are illustrated and described in the Museum Het Princessehof book "Swatow" by Barbara Harrisson. Surrounding the central pattern, on the inner wall, are four prunus sprays, the two larger sprays including perched birds. The wide flat rim is decorated with eight round floral panels within a repeated wave pattern. The underside is much more sparsely decorated with blue bands containing just a few floral designs.

This is a large and impressive dish with a diameter of 39 cm (15.25 inches). There is some "fritting" to the glaze at the rim and two small chips to the underside, from which emanate hairlines, that have been filled; considering its age and size, this dish is in very good condition
