LARGE Chinese Eastern Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Granary Building
This large architectural pottery model of a granary building was made during the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 - 220). It is made from a grey pottery and must originally have been quite brightly coloured as there are traces of various coloured pigments under the burial soil that still adheres to the surface. Interestingly, the large gabled roof has been made separately and is detachable, sitting on the flat top of the building around which are five decorative roof supports, three at the front and end at each end. There are various straight lines incised into the front flat surface, some of which surround the three windows which have been cut out on the right side. Toward the base at the front are three purpose-made circular holes. An unusual and impressive example of its type.
Height 64 cm (25 inches), width 61.5 cm (24 inches).
This item is one of our own collection of Han Dynasty pottery architectural models that has not previously been offered for sale. It is available to view at our gallery.
