Chinese Han Dynasty Pottery Farm House + Oxford TL Test
Fine & Rare Large Chinese Han Dynasty Pottery Farm House with Oxford TL Test

This superb architectural pottery model was made during the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 - 220). Many architectural models from the Han Dynasty are known, the most well-known being various military watch towers; this is of a farm house. It has been made from many thick slabs of clay that have been luted together with windows and doorways cut out, and various incised patterns made, while the clay was still soft, prior to firing. Note the detail of the tiled roof. On much of the base is a fine networks of old roots/plant growths from its long burial. We understand that originally this house would have stood on wooden legs inserted into the holes in the base; these, of course, have long since rotted away and are now lost.

This is large model with a length of 43 cm (16.75 inches), height 25 cm (10 inches), width 28 cm (11 inches), weight 12.4 kg (27.25 lbs). There is a chip at the end of the roof ridge and, of course, such a pottery object of this great age and size must reasonably be expected to have some degree of repair or restoration, as is indeed suggested by one of the samples taken for the TL test. However, the only obvious sign of repair is to one corner of the roof that has been broken and re-stuck, although other repairs should not be ruled out. This superb model really is in exceptional condition.

We have had this model tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction rooms and museums worldwide, with a result of a date of manufacture of "between 1,500 and 2,400 years ago". We show the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report test certificate that will accompany this model.
