Chinese Early Tang Dynasty Pottery Camel with Back Pack
Fine Chinese Early Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Camel with Back Pack

This rare and interesting pottery model of a laden camel was made during the early part of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906) or possibly a little earlier, during the Sui, Northern Qi or Northern Wei dynasty. It is made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in a white pigment on top of which are traces of black pigment. The camel stands alert with its mouth open, head raised and looking slightly to its left. It has particularly well-detailed pack on its back which includes a rabbit on one side and a brace of ducks, or geese, on the other.

This is quite a large example of its type with a height of 37 cm (14.5 inches). It is in very good condition and is available to view at our gallery.
