Large Chinese Eastern Han Dynasty Pottery Entertainer
Large Chinese Eastern Han Dynasty Pottery Model of an Entertainer / Singer (AD 25 - 220)

This large moulded pottery figure was made during the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 - 220). A whole variety of this type of model, representing entertainers, musicians and servants of various sizes, have been excavated from Sichuan province. This examples sits with mouth open and hand to his ear, suggesting he is a singer, possible actually in the act of singing. It is made from a buff-coloured pottery that is very highly-fired for its type (many known examples are low-fired and are prone to damage). There are faint traces of black and red pigments. In places on the surface are "calcified" deposits form its long burial. An attempt has been made to remove these from the lower body that has left minor abrasion marks in places.

Height 40.5 cm (16 inches). With no sign of restoration or repair this example is in fine condition.
