Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Camel (AD 618 - 906)
This fine pottery model of a camel was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in a creamy-white base coat on top of which have been painted yellow ochre and reddish-brown coloured pigments, also with traces of black and orange. The camel stands alert with its head raised high and neck turned very slightly to its right.
This is a good-sized example with a height of 39.5 cm (15.5 inches). Some degree of repair should realistically be expected for such a large and fragile object of this age, but any such repairs have been carried out to a high standard. This is a very nice example and is available to view at our gallery.
