Perhaps the most desirable pottery sculpture from the Tang Dynasty is the female courtier, or "fat lady". This figure was made around the mid 8th century and is a particularly elegant example. Note the details of the clothing and the hairstyle. It is made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in a base coat of white pigment on top of which have been painted orange, white, black and pink pigments. Please note the display stand is not included.

It is a good size with a height of 37.5 cm (14.75 inches). It is in fine condition with no obvious sign of restoration or repair. This figure, along with other examples of Tang Dynasty fat ladies, is available to view at our gallery.

As with many of our finer items, we have had this figure tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this item is shown; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 900 and 1500 years ago".
