Large Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Hill Jar + TL
Fine & Rare Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Hill Jar with Oxford TL Test (206 BC - AD 220)

This rare and unusual "hill" jar dates to the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It is made from a grey pottery and has been elaborately decorated both by pottery mouldings and by "cold" painting. The vessel stands on three moulded feet in the form of bears. The whole outer surface has been cold-painted in a base coat of a creamy-white pigment on top of which have been applied black, pink, red and green pigments.

On top of the wide red band that surrounds the vessel have been painted a series of human figures in various poses, mainly dancing although, regretfully, some of the detail has been lost. The elaborate cover, representing a hilly or mountainous scene, has been decorated with a moulded finial together with a series of moulded and applied trees and animals including horses, ducks, leaping rabbits or hares and running stags. The mountainous scenery has been emphasized with red, green and black pigments applied on top of white.

This is a large example of its type with a diameter of 30 cm (12 inches) and a height of 35 cm (13.75 inches). This impressive jar is in fine condition and is available to view at our gallery.

As with many of our finer items, we have had it tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this item is shown; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 1500 and 2400 years ago".
