Large Chinese Warring States / Han Dynasty Pottery Jar
Large Chinese Warring States / Han Dynasty Impressed Pottery Jar

This large and unusual pottery jar dates to the 3rd-2nd centuries BC, the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC) or possibly as late as the early Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8). It is made from a pale grey pottery and has several unusual features. It has a flared mouth and short neck, below which are a series of carved bands around the shoulder. On opposing sides in the middle of these bands are two handles, but instead of the handles fully protruding above the surface, the area under the handles have been recessed into the body. The lower part of the body has been repeatedly covered in coarse cord impressions. The base has quite a deep concave impression.

This is quite a large jar with a diameter of 29.5 cm (11.5 inches), height 25.5 cm (10 inches). This jar is in very good condition; there is some surface wear but no repair or restoration.
