Large Chinese Warring States Impressed Pottery Jar (475 - 221 BC)
This large and impressive pottery jar was made during the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC). It is relatively highly-fired, having a clear ring when tapped, and quite heavily-potted. The colour of the outer surface has fired to varying colours, reddish-brown to the lower body and under the rim, and a paler grey to the upper surface. The outer surface has been attractively decorated with repeated overlapping comb impressions. To the upper body these impressions alternate between horizontal and vertical, whereas to the lower body they are diagonal.
Diameter 35 cm (13.75 inches), height 28 cm (11 inches). There is some chipping to part of the base edge, although this looks like the result of an air bubble caused during manufacture. To the rim is a filled chip. Overall, a nice large example in good presentable condition.
