Fine Large Chinese Han Dynasty Glazed Stoneware Jar (206 BC - AD220)
This large and impressive stoneware jar, of the ware often referred to as "proto-porcelain", was made during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). This jar has a flared mouth with a wide body on top of a large integral foot. There is a raised ridge around the inner rim. On opposing sides to the upper shoulder are a pair a loop handles decorated with geometric impressions. Around the shoulder between two bands of incised lines in a band of incised geometric wavy lines. The upper body and inner mouth are coated in a yellowish-green ash glaze, clearly having been applied by brush. The unglazed surface has fired to a reddish-brown. On opposing sides of the foot are two purpose-made holes. There is minor surface wear and a kiln scar to the shoulder.
Height 38 cm (15 inches). A fine and exceptional example with no restoration or repair.
