Rare Chinese Song Dynasty Dragon Jar + Stand & Cover
Very Rare Chinese Song Dynasty Dragon Jar with Stand & Cover

This stoneware jar was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 -1279) or possibly the Yuan Dynasty (1279 - 1368). We have had a few similar "dragon" jars over the years but it is extremely rare to see such a jar with not only a cover, but a cut-out bowl in which it stands. We have known that such items existed as there is one illustrated in a Chinese museum book (see above for reference).

Such jars as this with an applied dragon around its shoulder are found in Sichuan province. We know also that such jars were used for the storage of grain for use in the afterlife as we previously had a similar jar that still contained the remains of grain.

The jar is heavily-potted and coated in dark speckled iron glaze. On the surface of the jar in places are "calcified" deposits, from its long burial.

Height 21 cm (8.25 inches). The tip of the dragon's tail has been lost, clearly in antiquity, probably during manufacture. No repair or restoration; fine condition.
