A Chiaroscuro Woodblock Print by John Baptist Jackson 18th. century
14 3/4 x 10 ins. (37.5 x 25.4 cms) Portrait of Algernon Sidney, after Justus van Egmont; short half-length to left, head turned and looking towards the viewer; wearing a cravat with tassels, hair in loose curls to the shoulders; in an oval. Chiaroscuro woodcut printed from four blocks in black, brown and ochre.
Lettered around the oval 'Zustus Verus pinx: / J:B:J. sculp: et exc:'; below the image with a quotation from Viscount Robert Molesworth's 'Account of Denmark as it was in the year 1692': 'At the Time when Mr. Algernon Sidney was Ambassador at that Court Monsieur Terlon the French Ambassador, had the Condifence to tear out of the Book of Mottos in the King's Library, this Verse, which Mr. Sidney (according to the Liberty allowed to all Noble Strangers) had written in it: / Manus haec inimica Tyrannis ense petit placidam sub Libertate quieteni. / Though Monsieur Terlon understood not a word of Latin, he was told by others the meaning of that Sentence, which he considered as a Libel upon the French Government and upon such as was then setting up in Denmark by French Assistance or Example. / Pref: to Acco:t. of Denmark 1th: Edit: P: 23.' The above information from the British Museum example 1860,0414.272. The BM have dated it to 1717-1780.
As can be seen from the photographs there is foxing of the paper and slight "misting" of the colours, possibly oxidisation of some of the pigments. The top edge is a little ragged but not excessively so.
