Chinese Western Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Cocoon Jar (206 BC - AD 8)

This fine quality pottery "cocoon" jar was made some 2,000 years ago during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8). It is made from a fine-grained grey pottery that is relatively highly-fired. It has been decorated by cold-painting various coloured pigments with a design of swirling cloud patterns within vertical and geometric bands. The paint does not extend all around the jar - this is intentional, as though the painted decoration were intended to be viewed from above. It is larger and of finer quality than many other known similar Han painted cocoon jars. All of the remaining pigment is original.

Height 27 cm (10.5 inches), length 31 cm (12.5 inches). There is of course some degree of surface wear, and minor chips to the base edge, but there is no sign of restoration or repair; this is a nice example in very good condition.

For reference please also see our almost identical example, reported to have come from the same excavation, that we have had TL tested - stock number M0368.
