Large Chinese Jin Dynasty Painted Pottery Tile of Mythical Creature (AD 1115 - 1234)

This rare and interesting carved pottery brick / tile dates to the Jin Dynasty (AD 1115 - 1234) and has been excavated from Shanxi province in the northern region of China. It is made from a grey pottery and has been carved whilst the clay was still soft, prior to firing. It has been "cold painted" in quite a thick white pigment on top of which has been applied a reddish-brown pigment. The top half of the brick depicts some kind of mythical creature with bulging eyes and a rather wide open mouth, bearing its teeth.

Height 44 cm (17.25 inches). There is wear and chips to the edges in places but no sign or restoration or repair; overall condition is very good.
