Large Chinese Jin Dynasty Pottery Tile - Female Figure (AD 1115 - 1234)

This fine and rare pottery tile dates to the Jin Dynasty (AD 1115 - 1234) and has been excavated from a tomb in Shanxi province in the northern region of China. Theatre, opera and music were immensely popular during the Jin Dynasty and in recent years various pottery tiles have been excavated depicting a whole range of musicians and characters from various musical and artistic performances.

This tile depicts a lady in a rode clutching a mirror; she is, presumably, a character from a folk tale. Note the detail of the clothing, the hairstyle and the facial features.

The tile measures 29 cm (11.5 inches) square, weight 5.6 kg (13.25 lbs). In places on the surface are traces left by ancient root/plant growths. Minor chips in places but nothing of any significance. No repair or restoration; fine condition.

For reference: similar tiles are shown in the excellent China Institute book "Theater, Life and the Afterlife: Tomb Decor of the Jin Dynasty from Shanxi". For details, go to: www.chinainstitute.org
