Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Painted Pottery Pack Horse (AD 386 - 534)
This rare and very interesting pottery model of a pack horse, or pony, was made during the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386 - 534). It is made from a grey pottery that has been "cold painted" with black, white and reddish-brown pigments. Note the detail of the pack and saddlebags on the horse's back and of the horse's trappings.
Height 24.5 cm (9.5 inches), length 27.5 cm (10.75 inches). A nice example in good presentable condition with probable repairs/restoration to the vulnerable parts such as the legs, base and tail, although there is no sign of repair when looking inside the hollow body.
