Tall Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse & Female Rider with Oxford TL Test

This attractive model of a horse & female rider was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a pink-coloured pottery that has been cold-painted in various coloured pigments, traces of which still remain. Note the long sleeves and hairstyle of the lady rider.

This is larger than the majority of known Tang horse and riders with a height of 40 cm (15.75 inches). Condition is exceptional with the only obvious sign of repair being the rider's head that has been broken and re-stuck.

In 2001 we had this model tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction rooms and museums worldwide, with a result of a date of manufacture of "between 900 and 1,500 years ago". Since that time this model has been in our own private collection. We show the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this model.
