Tall Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Zodiac Figure - Sheep / Ram / Goat
This very rare pottery figure is one from an outstanding set of zodiac figures. It was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It takes a human form, other than the head which is of the zodiac animal represented, in this case the sheep, ram or goat. The figure stands upright with hands clasped together against its chest under a flowing robe. It is made from a red pottery that has been cold-painted in a base coat of white on top of which are traces of red and black pigments.
Height 36 cm (14 inches). Overall condition is very good although there are chips to the base edge and the back of the collar around the neck. It is available to be viewed at our gallery, here in Brighton.
As with many of our finer items, we had one figure from this set tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide. Although this particular figure has not been TL tested (it is simply not economic to have every item tested) we show for information purposes the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report for the figure that was tested. We show also, for information, the other figures from this set.
