Very Rare Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Jar & Cover - Wanli Reign - Three Friends of Winter

This attractive small porcelain jar, or large jarlet, complete with its cover, was made during the Wanli Reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty. This type of "Swatow" (also known as "Zhangzhou") ware is typically fairly "heavily-potted". It has a thick crackled glaze that covers both inner and outer surfaces. The underglaze blue decoration features the "Three Friends of Winter" pattern, bamboo, pine and prunus. Bamboo is a symbol of longevity as it remains green throughout winter. Pine, an evergreen, represents strength and longevity. The prunus is a symbol of life as its blossoms appear in springtime on what appears to be an otherwise leafless and lifeless tree. Around the shoulder of the jar is a cloud, or "rui", pattern. But what really makes this jar exceptional is its cover. It is almost unknown for such a jar to come complete with its cover.

Height 9.5 cm (3.75 inches). This jar has been recovered from a shipwreck. The cover has a short hairline to its wall but overall condition is very good with no repair or restoration.
