Rare Chinese Stone Rubbing Lanting Xu Scroll. Probably Late Ming.

Length 1020 cms. (33 1/2 feet). The Lanting Xu stone rubbing is regarded as the finest example of early Chinese calligraphy. The present example is clearly the same rubbing as the example in Tokyo National Museum http://www.tnm.jp/modules/r_free_page/index.php?id=1569&lang=en Please note that all the Lanting Xu scrolls vary slightly in colouring, e.g sometimes the cartouche background colouring will be either black or the pale ochre colour, as will be certain small details. As these rubbings were all done individually by hand there are certain to be minor variations in colouring which had to be applied by hand. The Tokyo Museum example is dated to 1592 (Wanli 20). There is a very interesting article in this month's (Nov./Dec.) Orientations magazine on rubbings in the Bei Shan Tang Collection which examines various aspects of the Lanting Xu stone rubbing scroll.

Because of the incomplete nature of research into the various versions of the Lanting scroll we are not committing ourselves to a specific dating. The example illustrated in "Visible Traces" (Rare Books and Special Collections from the National Library of China. Beijing 2000) is dated very loosely as "probably Qing Dynasty 1644-1911". Their example is different to the present example which, as we have said previously, is the same as the Tokyo National Museum example of 1592.

The condition is good. The first section and the end section have been professionally repaired and backed without loss of the original image. As can be seen from the photos there are various small areas of damage to the edging and minor splits and tears, especially where the various sections are joined. Such imperfections are inevitable as the rubbing paper is so thin.

The size and number of photographs is restricted on this website but we will supply larger images of the entire scroll upon request.
