Japanese Shunga (Erotic) Woodblock Print Attrib. Shuncho 1790s.
12 1/2 x 8 3/8 ins. (32.2 x 21.3 cms) The fine deign has the original un-faded colour and is a fine impression. Shuncho (worked 1780-95) was responsible for several fine shunga designs in the style of Utamaro. By far the majority of shunga prints are unsigned, as with the present example. The print has at some time during its life been part of a makimono scroll and retains the scroll backing. The is some neatly repaired worm damage on the lower edge, but also just above the man's right hand which was wormed before the scroll mounting as it is under the backing sheet.
